Removable cartridge technology
Unfortunately, despite repeated attempts by various manufacturers to launch a reliable device with removable media on the market, none of them have yet managed to deceive the laws of nature. The reason is quite prosaic – initially the very concept of “removable media” is not very “friendly” with the word “reliability”.
If we draw an analogy between the HDD and the Zip-drive, then the replaceable Zip cartridge is a hard drive with an open camera.
The technology of assembling HDD cameras provides for their production only in clean rooms that meet the requirements of class 100. This means that in one cubic foot of air there can be no more than 100 dust particles with a size of 0.5 microns or more (because the heads hover above the surface at a height of 0 , 08 … 0.5 μm).
In addition, the working chamber of the HDD is sealed and external air is either not pumped into it at all, or is carried out through a special barometric filter capable of trapping particles larger than 0.3 microns in size. Inside the HDD’s working chamber itself, there are also additional air recirculation filters designed to clean the internal “atmosphere” of the sealed chamber from small particles of the carrier’s working layer, which, despite all the precautions taken, nevertheless show off from the disks during head landings.
Thanks to all these manufacturer’s precautions, the HDD can work even in conditions of severe pollution of the surrounding air.
What is a Zip cartridge? It is open not only for microscopic, but also for large particles, tobacco smoke, dust pumped through a computer, “amateur” fingers and even for cockroaches (with the curtain open).
One of the main reasons leading to the failure of heads and surfaces is the ineffective operation of the air purification filters in the Zip Iomega working chamber.
