How the intranet works
If you choose the most important thing (at least for small businesses), in order for your network to be called an “intranet”, it is necessary that:
information exchange between participants was carried out by e-mail;
information was searched by links to this information located in one repository (web-server) known to all.
For the organization of internal e-mail and an internal web server, it will not take a long time to install additional elements on the local network. All the software necessary for organizing the intranet can be installed on your dedicated LAN server.
Exchange documents on the intranet
To exchange documents on the server, an e-mail system is installed. This is mail inside the office (similar to an internal telephone exchange). However, working with it is no different from working with Internet e-mail. Forwarding the necessary document to any employee can be carried out even without exiting the Word text editor. The postal system guarantees that the document will be delivered to the addressee (and only to him), even if the addressee is not at the office at the time of sending. The system can notify the sender of the delivery of the document. This is a very correct and convenient organization of document exchange. In addition, modern mail systems have many additional features (maintaining a common calendar, a general work plan, sending a document along a specific route, etc.). Anyone who used an internal e-mail system in the office probably knows that after a period of getting used to, employees no longer want to switch to the old system of directly transferring files from directory to directory. The “dump” on the server disk disappears. But most importantly, the mail system does not require mandatory communication of subscribers through a local network. The usual telephone channel is enough for her. Therefore, connecting a remote office is easy and cheap. If the telephone channel combines offices, each of which already has a local area network with a dedicated server, then the servers will exchange mail on their own at the appointed time (in accordance with the settings). Employees will receive correspondence at a convenient time for them at a speed determined by the bandwidth of the local network.

This must be noted especially. Very often, company leaders do not even realize (probably they just do not have enough time for this), how much their employees need “information search”. It turns out that in most cases this is a very important part of the activities of employees in any office.

To organize the search for information on intranet technology, the web server software is installed on your local network server and the “start page” of the enterprise is formed. Essentially, on your internal web server, the start page is simply a table of contents of all the information that any employee may need. Each table of contents has a link to the corresponding document, regardless of where it is stored. Any employee may not even guess how it works, but by launching any standard browser, he can select the item he needs (for example, a price list) and with the click of a mouse button get access to the latest copy of the necessary document. The employee, who is responsible for preparing this or that document, corrects only one copy of the document and does not care about its delivery to other employees.
If there is a telephone channel for communication with the remote office, the employees of the remote office will get the same opportunities.
