Zip Drive Frequently Asked Questions
What are the models of Zip drives?
Currently, there are 2 main types of Zip drives: Zip-100 (100 MB removable disk capacity) and Zip-250 (250 MB removable disk capacity). Zip-100 is available in both external and internal versions. In external design, Zip-100 drives are available with SCSI, LPT and combined (Zip Plus) interfaces. A drive with a combined interface (Zip Plus) automatically recognizes the type of interface to which the drive is connected. The internal drive is available with SCSI and IDE / ATAPI. Recently, Zip-100 drives in external design with the PCMCIA and USB interface, as well as in the internal design for installation in notebook, have been manufactured. Zip-250 drives are available so far only in an external design for connecting to a parallel port and for connecting to a SCSI interface.
What adapters can be used to connect a SCSI zip drive?
Iomega offers a low-cost SCSI Zip Zoom SCSI Accelerator adapter, which is specially designed for connecting Zip drives. However, it can be used with almost any standard ASPI-compliant SCSI adapter.
Is data compression used in Zip drives?
Zip drives do not use any hardware or software compression tools for writing or reading information. However, popular compression programs or backup tools that use compression will work with the Zip drive.
Can I simultaneously connect both the Zip drive and the printer to the parallel port?
Can. The external Zip drive, in a modification for connecting to a parallel port, has a special connector included that allows you to simultaneously connect and use the Zip drive and printer. However, some printers have problems. In these cases, when using the Zip drive, the printer must be turned off.
What operating systems do Zip drives support?
Zip drives are supported by the operating systems MS-DOS or PC-DOS 4.x and higher, Novell DOS 7.0; Windows 3.1x OS / 2.34 and higher, Windows 95/98, NT 3.51 and higher, Macintosh 6.0.7. For all these operating systems, the appropriate drivers are supplied with the drive.
What utilities are included in the standard package?
The Iomega Tools utilities kit is included in the standard package for configuration, diagnostics, formatting, hard disk emulation and password protection of the disk. In addition, the kit includes utilities:
1-Step Backup / Restore is an easy-to-use backup system that allows you to back up your hard drive to multiple removable media. Note that many standard backup tools (such as Windows tools) do not support copying with media changes.
Copy Machine – allows you to make duplicate Zip-disks on a single drive.
FindIt – keeps track of the contents of disks, which allows you to quickly, without searching all the disks, find the information you need.
Iomega Guest – for temporary connection of the Zip-drive to any computer without installing the necessary drivers.
