You can still praise the advantages of technical solutions of the processor. Moreover, the “stone” turned out to be really successful. But many are probably most interested in the end result. I hasten to immediately assure that the Athlon really surpasses the P-III in all respects. It is no accident, apparently, this time AMD performed almost all the performance tests familiar and unfamiliar to us.
AMD does not make a secret of its results. All results, including a description of the test methodology, you can find online. In the very near future we will conduct some tests ourselves. The purpose of these tests, of course, is not to prove the advantages of the new product, but to find out how Athlon will work on motherboards that are actually available in Ukraine? AMD did tests on computers with a motherboard of its own design. Maybe the name of this “motherboard” is “GOMEZ” to some Russian-speaking readers and does not inspire confidence, but this board is developed by AMD for ourselves, and we will install Athlon in those boards that we get.
And then … further life becomes even more interesting! AMD is not just optimistic, but even somewhat belligerent. He intends to win up to 30% of the processor market in the near future. The offensive is planned on an entire front: from the cheapest home computers to the most high-performance multiprocessor servers. For this, Athlon will have many modifications. Probably, for the cheapest computers, AMD will ruin something specially in a good processor to make it cheaper. But AMD is also likely to make the necessary Athlon modifications for the coolest solutions. Somewhat incomprehensible, of course, is the question of price. Of course, AMD will not miss the market for the cheapest computers, and for this niche there will be a cheap version of Athlon. But for server platforms, it is unlikely that a processor that has better specifications than Intel will be cheaper, even if it is manufactured by AMD. Most likely, we are witnessing the fact that the computer market is slowly but surely splitting into two competing camps. For us this may be somewhat troublesome, but in general – a favorable factor. Competition will force both players to keep very reasonable prices for their products.
